Canon's Flagship Compact Camera G1 X Gets Upgrades
Canon announced the PowerShot G1 X Mark II Enhanced Grip Edition - a new flagship compact camera and successor to the PowerShot G1 X with expected available date in April 2014.
G1X mark II will fill the gap between G16 model and the company's entry level DSLR, boasting the best imaging performance ever seen in a Canon compact camera.
Notable upgrades from the original G1 X include a more powerful 24-120mm f/2-3.9 zoom lens a new 1.5-inch sensor and a faster DIGIC 6 processor. The combination of the upgrades in this model will make this camera one of the highest performing compact non interchangeable lens camera in the market. Well, except for Sony's full-frame compact DSC-RX1 which costs almost three grands.
One drawback with the new model, at least for some folks, is the omission of optical viewfinder, but the 3-inch touchscreen now tilts up 180 degrees, keeping up with the trends in the industry. For those who refuge to frame the shot without viewfinder, Canon will be offering an external electronic viewfinder.
The external design of G1 X features a stainless steel chassis and all aluminium metal exterior. The camera also has a large ergonomic grip for a durable and professional feel.
The high resolution screen displays with sRGB spectrum that is identical to the colour range captured and processed, enabling photographers to shoot confidently and review pictures with incredible accuracy.
The power of this flagship compact camera is in the large sensor. At 1.5-inch, it is significantly larger than most compact cameras available today. In fact, it has the surface area that is over twice as large as conventional 1.0 type sensors in competitor models. The result is the pixel size that is 4.5x larger than the most recent PowerShot G16.
The shallow depth of field delivered by this sensor is comparable to an APS-C size DSLR sensor. Canon Powershot G1 X Mark II will be competing directly with Sony's popular RX100 Mark II with similar price and spec.
