Samyang Announces Updated Ultra Wide-angle Lens for MFT

Samyang, the lens manufacturer that also produces fantastic lens under Rokinon and Bower brand, has announced several manual focus wide-angle lenses for various mirrorless systems including Micro Four Thirds format.

Designed for APS-C-sized sensors, the new 12mm f/2 lens has an angle-of-view equivalent to that of an 18mm lens on 35mm full-frame. For Micro Four Thirds camera, the angle-of-view will be equivalent to that of a 24mm lens.

The 12mm f/2 NCS CS comes with Samyang's nanocrystal anti-reflective coating, and sports 12 lens elements in 10 groups. The lens was manufactured to deliver enough sharpness even for sensors with a resolution of 24 megapixels and up. Samyang will be delivering this lens for other formats such as Canon EF-M, Fujifilm X, Micro Four Thirds, Sony E and Samsung NX mount later this month.  It's priced at $399 (US), but we will let you know if the lens will be available at discounted price.

Samyang’s older 24mm f/1.4 and 35mm f/1.4 lenses will be available in Micro Four Thirds and Sony E-mount later this month, priced at at $549 (24mm) and $499 (35mm).   However, these particular focal length may not be a popular choice due to Micro Four Thirds format's 2x crop factor.

Lastly, the cinema counterparts of these lenses, the 24mm T1.5 and 35mm T1.5, will also be made available in Micro Four Thirds mount later this month, in addition to the 14mm T3.1 and 85mm T1.5 cine lenses. Coming in at $749 (24mm), $549 (35mm), $449 (14mm), and $349 (85mm) , these lenses will probably find a liking with videographers and cinematographers on a budget, using Panasonic’s GH3 and GH4 camera models.

The Micro Four Thirds format enjoys one of the largest selection of native lenses among compact interchangeable lens systems, and the future of the format looks bright as lens manufactures started taking it more seriously.
