Olympus Updates OM-D E-M1 with Firmware V3.0
Great news for the owners of Olympus' flagship Micro Four Thirds camera, OM-D E-M1. You can download Olympus Digital Camera Updater or Olympus Viewer 3 software for FREE to update your firmware to version 3.0 today.
Update: Olympus Digital Camera Updater is now up to V1.20. Make sure you install the this latest version before attempting to update firmware for your camera and lens. The update failed without any meaningful error message when I tried it with Updater V1.03.
Update 2: Well, after upgrading the Olympus Digital Camera Updater to V1.20, firmware installation for my OM-D E-M1 still failed. My camera was at V2.0 firmware with V3.0 available and Olympus Pro 12-40mm which was attached to the camera was at V1.0 with V1.1 showing as available.
The solution was to detach the lens and update the camera body first to V3.0 then attach the lens to get its own update.
Firmware Update 3.0 Changes
- AF tracking during C-AF continuous shooting in continuous shooting H mode is supported.
- Previously, in continuous shooting L mode 6.5 frames per second was possible, but now taking a maximum of 9 frames per second in continuous shooting H mode is possible.
- OI.Share Ver. 2.5 is supported.
Note: We recommend setting C-AF Lock as standard when using C-AF.
With OI, Share V 2.5 update, you will be able to shoot movie from smartphone or tablet with live view on display. It's disappointing that we did not get any upgrade in the video recording functions such as 4K and 120p.
The improvement in sequential shooting performance was accomplished by updated algorithm used for phase-detection. In fact, 9 fps with continuous -AF is pretty impressive. When you set OM-D E-M1 to use C-AF, 37-point on-chip phase detection AF is engaged. You will not miss a shot during kids's sports games with 9 fps, and a sharp focus on each of the frame.
